What is the Olfactory System?

February 24, 2020 By admin

Olfactory System

  • The sensory system used for smelling
  • Vital for the processing and perception of odor
  • Structures of the olfactory system include:
    • Nose
    • Nasal Cavity
    • Olfactory Epithelium
    • Cribriform Plate
    • Olfactory Nerve
    • Olfactory Bulbs
    • Olfactory Tract
    • Olfactory Cortex
  • Our sense of smell works by the detection of odors. The olfactory epithelium is located in the nose, which contains millions of chemical receptors that detect odors. When we sniff, chemicals in the air, they are dissolved in mucus. The odor receptor neurons in olfactory epithelium then detect these odors and send the signals on to the olfactory bulbs. These signals are then sent along olfactory tracts to the olfactory cortex of the brain through sensory transduction where they are processed as an odor.
  • The olfactory cortex has connections with other limbic system structures such as the amygdala, hippocampus, and hypothalamus which translates smell into thoughts and emotions. The amygdala is involved in forming emotional responses and memories, the hippocampus indexes and stores memories, and the hypothalamus regulates emotional responses.

Different scents can help elicit feelings such as calming, stress relief, alerting the body, and helping the body fall into sleep.

Tonight we celebrated an incredible milestone for Tonight we celebrated an incredible milestone for Colleen McGuinness at Sakura in Westport!
Colleen, a student from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, has officially completed her second and final Level II Fieldwork placement, marking the end of her clinical training and the beginning of her transition from student to occupational therapist. It has been a privilege to mentor her and watch her grow into a confident, compassionate, and skilled clinician.
Joining us for the celebration was Lexi Berroa from Iona University, who is continuing her own fieldwork journey. It is always inspiring to spend time with future occupational therapists who are dedicated to helping others and making a difference in the lives of children and families.
As a fieldwork educator, moments like these are incredibly rewarding. Watching students reach major milestones and prepare for the next chapter of their careers is one of the greatest privileges of this profession.
Congratulations, Colleen! We are so proud of you and all that you have accomplished. Wishing you confidence, success, and peace as you prepare for the NBCOT boards. Your future is bright, and occupational therapy is fortunate to have you.
