A Heartfelt Children’s Book That Helps Families Understand How the Body’s Senses Support Learning, Focus, and Regulation
After exploring hand skills, motor planning, daily routines, and eye hand coordination in the earlier books, I wanted to focus on one of the most important foundations for child development, the sensory system.
That’s what inspired Sensory Skills in OT, the sixth book in my “What Is OT?” series. This story helps children and families understand how the body’s eight senses work together to support everyday life.
💛 Meet Cathyrn, the Heart of the Story 💛
In this story, we meet Cathyrn, a bright and imaginative little girl who often feels that the world is a lot, sometimes too loud, too busy, too bright, or too confusing. Certain clothes feel itchy, noisy rooms feel overwhelming, and new foods feel scary. She doesn’t always understand why her body reacts the way it does, and that can make her feel different or frustrated. Through occupational therapy, Cathyrn learns that nothing is “wrong” with her, her body is simply sending messages that she needs help organizing. She discovers how her senses and brain work together and how OT can help her feel calm, safe, and confident.
✨ Understanding the Eight Senses ✨
Every day, our brains receive messages from eight sensory systems. These include:
👀 Vision
👂 Hearing
👃 Smell
👅 Taste
✋ Touch
⚖️ Vestibular (Balance & Movement)
💪 Proprioception (Body Awareness)
🧩 Interoception (Feelings Inside the Body: hunger, tired, calm, excited)
When these messages are organized and interpreted correctly, children can move, learn, play, and participate smoothly and confidently. But when sensory messages feel mixed up, confusing, or overwhelming, everyday tasks, like getting dressed, focusing in class, sitting for circle time, brushing teeth, or trying new foods, can feel much harder.
Sensory Skills in OT shows children that their bodies aren’t “too much”, they are simply communicating. And OT helps them learn what their bodies need to feel safe, calm, and ready to learn.
💬 From the Author
As an occupational therapist, I’ve seen how powerful it is when children finally understand their sensory world. When they learn why their bodies react the way they do, and when families understand it too, everything becomes easier, calmer, and more connected.
I wrote Sensory Skills in OT to help families feel empowered, informed, and supported. Sensory processing is complex, but this book breaks it down gently, clearly, and with the same warmth and playfulness found throughout the series.
❤️ A Learning Tool for Families, Teachers, and Therapists ❤️
Sensory Skills in OT is a helpful, child-friendly resource for:
- Parents, who want to understand their child’s sensory needs
- Teachers, who wish to support regulation and focus in the classroom
- Therapists, who want a warm, accessible way to explain sensory processing
This book teaches that sensory processing challenges are not misbehavior, they are messages from the body, and OT helps children learn to understand and respond to those messages with confidence.
🌟 Join the OT Journey🌟
OT helps children connect their hearts, minds, and bodies so they can feel calm, confident, and ready for the world around them. My hope is that Sensory Skills in OT helps families everywhere understand the incredible power of the sensory system, and how OT supports children every step of the way.
