Using a Vibration Plate to Support Your Childs Nervous System
At Building Blocks, we often explore creative ways to help children regulate their nervous systems, stay focused, and engage in meaningful activities. One tool that has shown great benefits is the vibration plate, which gives the body vestibular input (movement and balance) and proprioceptive input (awareness of body position). These types of input are essential for sensory processing, as they help the nervous system stay calm, alert, and ready for learning.
When children stand, sit, or even lie on a vibration plate, the subtle oscillations stimulate the vestibular system, helping the brain understand body position and movement in space. This can promote calmness, focus, and overall nervous system regulation.
What’s even better is that children don’t have to just stand still! They can pair the vibration plate with fine motor tasks, like completing a p
uzzle or drawing, or visual perceptual activities, such as matching colored shapes or sorting objects. For some children, simply spending a few minutes on the plate can provide a soothing “reset” to help them self-regulate and engage more effectively in other activities throughout their day.
We incorporate vibration plates thoughtfully into sessions to meet each child’s unique sensory and functional needs; supporting not just movement, but attention, coordination, and emotional regulation. It’s a simple yet powerful way to harness the connection between movement and the brain to help children thrive!
